Wayne grew up on the Cash Ranch 20 miles north of Langtry, Val Verde County, Texas. His family raised Rambouillet sheep, Angora and Spanish goats. Wayne participated in the Langtry and Val Verde County 4-H program showing breeding ewes and rams and muttons.

Wayne and Cheryl married in 1969 and began ranching on the Rio Grande south of Dryden, Texas. After 20 plus years of raising sheep and goats in Southwest Texas, the increasing cost of shearing and several years of drought conditions; they left the ranching industry.

The Texas Department of Transportation transferred Cheryl to Gainesville. We purchased 37 acres of land in Cooke County just one mile off Interstate 35. Wayne was looking for something to run on the farm. Since he continued to be interested in sheep, he read anything he could find on them. An article on Dorper sheep caught his eye, causing him to do further research. Research told him that Dorpers are hardy and adaptable, have excellent maternal qualities, a long breeding season, are fertile and prolific, they cross well with other breeds, are excellent grazers, and most importantly they are heat and insect tolerant. He contacted several other Texas breeders before deciding he wanted to be a part of this exciting industry.

We purchased our first full-blood ram from Leo Woodbury in 2000. We put “D-1” on black-bellied Barbadoes and we were in the Dorper business. Currently we have three full-blood rams and fifty ewes.

We have found that Dorper ewes are easy to work with and can become very gentle. They are excellent mothers. Multiple births are normal with Dorpers; we have had triplets and a couple of sets of quads. That will increase the size of your herd faster, especially since the Dorper will breed year round.
